What Are the Risks of Abortion?
There are physical and emotional risks to both medical abortion and surgical abortion. Possible risks to medical abortion include the following:
- The body does not release all pregnancy tissue in the uterus, also called an incomplete abortion. This may require surgical abortion.
- An ongoing pregnancy if the procedure doesn’t work.
- Heavy and prolonged bleeding.
- Infection.
- Fever.
- Digestive symptoms such as upset stomach.
Though there are multiple types of surgical abortion procedures, they share possible risks, including:
- Damage to the uterus or cervix
- Uterine perforation
- Excessive bleeding
- Infection of the uterus or fallopian tubes
- Scarring of the inside of the uterus
- Reaction to the medicines or anesthesia, such as problems breathing
- Not removing all of the tissue, requiring another procedure
Do I Need an Ultrasound?
An ultrasound is a necessary step to gain clarity about your pregnancy health and your pregnancy options. Ultrasounds are used to confirm three important pregnancy details:
- How far along you are (gestational age)
- The location of your pregnancy (whether the pregnancy is located within the uterus)
- Pregnancy viability (whether there is a heartbeat and the pregnancy is progressing)
These details will inform you on whether a different medical procedure, such as ectopic pregnancy treatment, will be needed for your health. We at Life Choice Pregnancy Center offer no-cost ultrasounds to women who qualify after a positive result with one of our medical-grade pregnancy tests.
